rickmans's posterous

Rick is on a day to day basis working on social media (strategy) cases for several (Fortune 500) clients. He lives and loves social media, helping people and enterprises in using social media in a way that adds value for them. He also gives guest lectures at several universities to make students aware of the impact social media will have on their life in general and on enterprises in particular in the near and not so near future. Is he a geek? Well… yes. A geek with a social life though. Even one with a wife and a young son, who’s first English words were ‘Social media’.

Yammer makes permanent collaboration easier

The Group’s employees also use a Yammer platform (the corporate equivalent of Twitter for micro-blogging), increasingly successful since 2008, with 7,000 members to date. “By breaking down geographical and hierarchical boundaries, Yammer makes permanent collaboration easier, and saves large numbers of e-mails,” according to Rick Mans, Group Social Media expert. The in-house expertise acquired with its own social networks will soon enrich the Capgemini offering.

Capgemini's Annual Report page 68

Yammer is a great tool that enables a lot of colleagues to collaborate independent of location, timezone or any other barrier. This is emphasized since this tool made it to Capgemini's Annual report. The annual report itself is a good read and has a nice design, however the site has a lot of content that is not in the report but still adds a lot of value. The video of Andrew McAfee on the site is for example very much worth your attention.

Facebook, Twitter: Six steps to making them work for your business

Education, education, education
While many staff will have used at least one social media application, others may have no experience of the technology. It might sound counter-intuitive to provide training in a medium that you are trying to control but making sure all staff have a basic grasp of the leading social media tools is fundamental to laying down policies on use.

"The key to controlling social media is education," says Rick Mans, social media evangelist for consultancy Capgemini. "Employers need to talk to employees about the technologies they are using, how they are using them and their impact on the working day. Not only will this communication increase trust but it might give those in charge new ideas about utilising these technologies to generate business."
